Ok, my title is slightly misleading. . .and this post is going to read more like a rant, because it is a rant.
I do not hate the verse but I do hate when people use it like duct tape. Philippians 4:13 is not a fix all verse! It has a specific context and a deliberate meaning. Dr. Lytle, a professor of mine in college, once said, "[a verse] cannot mean what it never meant". He was saying that we do not get to choose what an author meant when he wrote the words he did (valid point to remember in today's society too, I think).
There is a very popular children's song that I believe is sung in churches all across North America. While the underlying purpose of the song can be encouraging, it is essentially not true. The song itself tries to encourage children to share the Gospel with anyone and everyone they know, even as young children, but it does so with words that are misleading. The popular song of choice? When we lose sight of things, particularly when we lose sight of things that our parents or grandparents held onto securely, we look back on them and often say, "we have lost the art of _______". Why do we say that? How have we come to understand things of the past as art forms? It seems to be a matter of perspective. Togo. West Africa. 2 weeks. There and back again. What a trip!
On July 21, I left for Togo, West Africa via AirFrance. Landing on July 22, I was exhausted but excited. I absolutely love Africa so I was very excited to be back on the continent. My first week was a survey trip, designed to allow me to meet missionaries, see ministries, and get a "lay of the land" so to speak. This week would be influential in helping me to formulate ideas for what is to come in my new ministry in Africa as a media specialist.Read More
